When you gaze long into the abyss, you might forever change the fate of the universe. Broken and lost, the Emperor’s punishment pushed Lorgar to a new quest seeking the truth. In this dark pilgrimage, he stumbled into new powers more deserving of his devotion. The primordial whispers of chaos slowly turned into a melody that the Word Bearers would transform into what would become the Horus Heresy. Now it is your turn to conduct the melody.
The Word Bearers join Warhammer The Horus Heresy: Legions as the second new faction of the Tempest expansion! The new faction will become collectable tomorrow, November 1st at around 12 pm UTC, with renewed art and mechanics ready to spread the blessings of chaos and tear the lies on which the Imperium is built! Will you muster the Sons of Lorgar and become the looming doom over the Imperium? Keep reading to find out how to collect them!
New keyword: Offering
No sacrifice is too small when you want to tumble the Imperium from its foundations! The Word Bearers very much know that sometimes sacrifices must be made, and this is reflected in their new mechanic: Offerings.
Whenever a troop dies during a Word Bearers player’s turn, their Offering counter will go up, increasing in value as the match goes on. Some Word Bearers troops and tactics can trigger additional effects if an Offering threshold has been reached. This is represented with the “Offering X” keyword, which will mark the count of Offerings players will need to reach before playing the card if they wish to trigger this additional effect.
In the update preceding the introduction of the new Legion into the game, there are also two changes to Word Bearers cards from the Galaxy in Flames collection:
- Khoura Squad: Changed description to ‘Sacrifice: Put in play a Zealous Cultist’
- Chosen of the Gods: Increased requirement from 4 to 5
Word Bearers warlords
Many of the Word Bearers Legion joined Lorgar in his pilgrimage and peered into the abyss, learning of the primordial truths of the universe. Of them, three of the truest believers will lead the new Word Bearers into battle when the Legion joins Warhammer The Horus Heresy Legions:
- Zardu Layak: Once a devout believer in the Imperial Truth, Monarchia’s fall led him to embrace the Ruinous Powers.
- Erebus: The mortal instrument of the Ruinous Powers, through whose guidance planned the downfall of the Emperor.
- Lorgar Aurelian: Primarch of the Word Bearers. A warrior and scholar, whose quest for truth would set the stage for the Horus Heresy.

How to start collecting them
There are many ways to collect Word Bearers cards, especially during the first weeks after their release! Take a look at them:
- Word Bearers faction crates contain 5 random cards, 3 of them guaranteed from the NEW Word Bearers collection including a rare card or better, and the other 2 from all cards released since the Shadow of the Warmaster expansion.
- Get AMAZING VALUE with a time-limited bundle containing Zardu Layak, 15 Word Bearers crates and an exclusive premium avatar, available during the faction’s release weekend.
- Take advantage of the current and upcoming Battle Pass! Select the Word Bearers as your preferred faction AFTER THE FACTION IS RELEASED and start collecting them through card rewards. Unlock the Premium Pass to get even more rewards, including Legendary cards, exclusive cosmetics and new content!
- Play the new event pitting the Word Bearers against forces of the Imperium and fill your collection! Each reward crate in the event has at least 1 of the new faction’s cards.
- Check out the Daily shop! Every day there will be new cards for sale with gems for a limited time. Keep your eyes open!
New Twitch Drops campaign
With the Inferno expansion, we introduced Twitch Drops into Warhammer The Horus Heresy: Legions and Tempest will keep it going! Twitch Drops are a fantastic way to earn additional rewards simply by enjoying Legions content on Twitch, and the Word Bearers’ release will also begin a new Twitch Drops campaign.

New flashback event: the Sacking of Monarchia
A new timed event will allow all players to play with the Word Bearers in draft mode. Wishing to quiet the intense religious tendencies of Lorgar and his people, the Emperor orders the destruction of Monarchia, the Perfect City, on his son’s home planet.
Remember to complete the guaranteed “Win 3 matches” daily mission to unlock a free event run every day and kickstart your Word Bearers collection. Every reward crate in the event contains at least 1 of the new cards!
The new Word Bearers enter the fray on 1st November! Can you listen to the whispers of Chaos? Change the Galaxy’s fate with a well placed word and spread the blessings of the dark pantheon!
